Richard ("Rich") Mendola

Vice President for Information Technology &
  Chief Information Officer

Dr. Richard (“Rich”) Mendola, became Emory’s first vice president for information technology and chief information officer on September 1, 2005. Dr. Mendola and the Office of Information Technology provide leadership and direction for information technology (IT) services across Emory University and Emory Healthcare. Dr. Mendola’s enterprise IT groups include: Emory Healthcare Information Systems (EHc-IS), IT Finance & Administration, Research & Health Sciences IT, and University Technology Services (UTS).

Emory Healthcare Information Services (EHc-IS) provides guidance, input and direction in the selection, installation and support of IT solutions that meet the goals of fiscal, operational and clinical improvement for Emory Healthcare. Key IT initiatives include electronic medical record (EeMR), enterprise medical imaging, and clinical data warehouse.

Research and Health Sciences (RHS) supports and advances the research IT environment for researchers across the University. In addition, the Division works with each Woodruff Health Sciences Center unit to optimize information technology support and services. Key initiatives and services include: high performance computing cluster, collaboration environments, server provisioning, and consultation.

University Technology Services (UTS) delivers IT services to Emory's academic and administrative communities. Key services include email and calendaring, administrative systems, academic systems, technology-enriched classrooms and computer labs, and information security. In addition, UTS delivers data center operations networking and telephony services to Emory University and Emory Healthcare.

Dr. Mendola’s current focus is on implementing an IT governance and prioritization structure that will better align Emory’s IT expenditures with its strategic objectives. He is also working in partnership with the IT organizations across the schools, colleges and institutes of Emory University to deliver a more seamless customer experience.

Dr. Mendola currently serves as a director on the board of the OpenEAI software foundation, which is focused on open source software and methodologies for enterprise application integration. Prior to coming to Emory, he was the associate vice president for Administrative Information Technology Services, across the three-campus University of Illinois system. From 1995–99, he was chief information officer of the University of Illinois Medical Center. Dr. Mendola received his M.A., Ph.D. and MBA degrees from the University of Connecticut and his B.S. degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
